This week’s show featured a spirited discussion of current events, including a debate about the most recent situations of  Cynthia McKinney, the young people turned away from the swimming pool in Philadelphia, the death of Steve McNair and commentary about the big funeral earlier this week.grn

Diva in Demand began her discussion with information gleaned from the adventures of Ed Begley Jr., actor and ardent environmentalist,  on his television show, Living With Ed.  The show follows the adventures of his family, as they lead an eco friendly existence in hollywood. The thing that impressed her most about what she had learned about Ed Begley, Jr, as well as Larry Hagman (who generates solar energy to power his house, sell to his neighbors and the power company), was how easy it was to make those changes.

Melette got really great advice on how to save the environment and money at the same time from readers of her face book page.  Tips included switching from bottled water to filtered pitchers, use of compact florescent bulbs, washing with cold water when possible (it saves 85 percent of the energy expenses required by warm water), buying recycled products, shopping with reuseable grocery bags, getting politically involved in environmental causes like landfill elimination  and choosing energy star rated appliances and electronics.

I shared ten ways to go green and save green from the Worldwatch Institute, an organization which has been involved in environmental research and policy making for over 35 years.  I also included information from  Planet Green, a Discovery Channel Network,  on conserving bathroom resources and mixing your own environmentally friendly cleaners as well as information on Seventh Generation, an environmentally friendly cleaning company. Other green friendly cleaning products include Simple Green and Green Works.

Next week, we’ll discuss leaders in the African American community, past and present, as a precursor to our viewing and discussion of the Black in America 2 programming on July 22 and 23 on CNN.
