Hot pants for a four year old? Really?

A little over a week ago, I bought some clothes for Little A. I found some cute tops and pants that would see her from the summer into the early school year, or even later with layers. I continued to stroll through the toddler/little kids’ department when I saw some cute little t-shirts and what appeared to be coordinating print shorts. Once I held the shorts up, though, they turned out to be hot pants. For a four year old? A year or so ago, I bought my husband’s niece, a 13 year old girl, a dress and it took forever to find something age appropriate, stylish, but not too suggestive. I wondered back then how I would handle things when Little A got to her tweens and early teens. And now I’m here, eye to eye, with four year old short shorts.

There is a new book out about the sexualization of young girls these days, so I guess I’m not the only person who sees something wrong with this.

I had a problem finding shorts for my daughter for school 3 years ago when she turned 7. At her school, the shorts had to be long enough that when her arms were at her side, the shorts touched her fingertips. Nothing shorter. I thought that would be no problem. I WAS WRONG!!! I had to SEARCH for shorts long enough. Today I saw a girl about the ripe ol age of 15, wearing shorts that if they were any shorter whould have been bikini bottoms, and so tight I dont know how she was breathing… AND HIGH HEELS!!! Good lord! But then I saw her mom- and understood where she got it from.

A lot of times, mothers are a big part of what girls wear, sadly.
