The kind of princess I want my daughter to be.

I’ve heard the term princess used a lot lately. Some people use it to hide behind insecurities. They are all like, “I’m a princess because I’m better than you.” Then they proceed to tell you about all the brand name things that they own. That’s not the kind of princess I want my daughter to be.
I want her to be a young lady who has high standards for her life, who wants what is best for her. Who wants to give as she has been blessed. Who cares about people. Who speaks up for herself. As beautiful on the inside as on the outside. That’s the kind of princess I want my daughter to be.

I wish I had been called a princess when I was a little girl. For some reason I thought that little brown girls like me couldn’t be princesses. If I were a mom I would want my daughter to know that she was a princess.

How far could we go as people of color, even as Americans in general, if all little girls felt like little princesses? Valued and beautiful? That would be a good thing.

I’m sure she will be that type of princess because those values are being instilled in her.
