Both of my parents’ families originated in South Louisiana, so all of those great cooking traditions (soul food, creole, cajun, even a little French) were with me as a child. It wasnt always the most elaborate food you could get, but there was something about the love that we had when we were shucking corn, splitting peas, washing greens, peeling shrimp, cutting up the chicken, even seasoning pork chops, that made it taste that much better (even after I’ve had so called better). Maybe that’s why I think that if I have my black eye peas and cabbage for New Year’s, I’ve got it made.
Better a dinner of herbs where love is, than a fatted ox and hatred therewith. (Proverbs 15:17)
I think life is like that too. Don’t get me wrong, I like my share of nice stuff, but when I act and do things out of deep and honest love, it just seems to go a LOT FARTHER .
This was one of the best holidays I’ve ever had, and we’ve had some good ones. I really enjoyed spending the extra time with my family. I hope that next Christmas I get to go down South and spend time with my family and get to meet some of my husband’s family down there, but this was a really great Christmas. Happiness is priceless. I’ve always heard people talk about choosing to be happy, but once the choice is made, there is nothing like it. No, everything is not perfect by a long shot, but wow, the big problems don’t seem as big when ones focus is changed, at least it seemed that way to me.
