“When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts”
Last night I got to see the Spike Lee Katrina documentary, well at least part one of it anyway. It’s been almost a year and so much has happened. I think everyone in our country needs to see it. There were so many times during the course of the production that I was just thankful that I wasn’t the only person in America who thought some of the things and had some of the questions voiced by the spectrum of people interviewed on their Katrina experiences and impressions.
The city is supposedly on its way back from the disaster and all that, but this documentary woke up a lot of feelings that I thought had been put to rest. Maybe I was emotionally exhausted by the end of it. I like that the documentary presented the facts and let the viewers draw their own conclusions. I think the American people should demand more of its government, for real. I mean we can drop food in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, countries where great numbers of the population purport to HATE US, and yet we allow people to starve, go without basic medication and necessities in hundred degree weather. Just because the majority of them didn’t vote republican? Just because the majority of them are black? Says some ugly things about America, out loud and for real. Between the stuff that went down around 9/11 (you know, how all them bin ladens got flights out of the country and stuff for starters), the war in Iraq and the hurricane, it’s just plain ugly.
And now for the good news…
Friday night, we welcomed this little guy into our family. I look forward when he starts sleeping AT NIGHT.
