Okay. I don’t understand why in the world Mary Kay Letourneau and her victim, er, husband are still on the television screen these days. As a mother of two sons, I can’t even begin to accept the fact that a twice convicted child predator marrying her victim isn’t cause for major concern, but last night, I was flipping channels, and the news reporter asked Mary Kay Letourneau how she explained her “situation” to her young kids, whose father happens to be her victim.
“I tell them that what I did was wrong. Mommy broke a rule so she had to take a time out.” My husband and I looked at each other. Mommy had to take a time out?
“Did you hear that? She had to take a time out?”
“Yeah, I heard that”
“Like she was running in the halls or something. Like she wouldn’t behave at the grocery store. She had to take a time out.”
Then my husband accused me of being harsh. I’m sorry. It’s just that I put so much time and effort (not to mention money) and love into my sons, just so they can be successful, contributing members of society. I just can’t begin to fathom the damage done by a teacher, somebody who is supposed to be a TRUSTED and MATURE part of a child’s life when this type of thing happens. I don’t care how mature they try to say this kid is, he is damaged by this event in his life. I just don’t think it is cute at all. That’s all.
