Silver and Gold

I remember waaaayyy back in my Brownie days (yeah, those cookie hustling girl scouts with the beanies. I was one for a minute) there was a song called Make New Friends.

Make new friends – but keep the old,
one is silver and the other’s gold.

You know, grownup life HARDLY EVER turns out to be as simple as the girl scout stuff. There is no verse in there about people who don’t want to be held on to. I mean you can’t keep them. There is also no verse about the toxic ones that you have to let go. Don’t get me wrong. I have a few friends from high school and college who I am still tight with and I value their friendship, even though we live thousands and thousands of miles apart. Some of us have taken on the values (and prejudices) or our forefathers, and that can be a problem. The real gold comes out in the end.

Yeah, we had to sing it too. My beanie never fit right. My mom had to pin it in place and stuff… 😀

never was a girl scout – but isn’t it funny how this song has stuck with you into adulthood… that’s why it’s so important that we sow good things into these babies, cause those good things go a long way…
