Today was a sad day. It was the day that I faced an unpleasant reality about a show I used to watch, Girlfriends. It has jumped the shark. Not just jumped the shark, jumped the heck out of a shark. I mean, those chicks are wearin waterskis FOR REAL. They have run slap out.
Jumping the shark, for the uninformed, means that a show has run its course and is desperately coming up with filler as opposed to content to stretch more episodes. The term originates from that Happy Days episode where the Fonz jumped over a shark. I was there, trust me, it was over (hate to admit I’m old enough to remember, but at least I was a kid. Did I say kid? I meant toddler. Yeah, I was a toddler with extraordinary memory…). Lynn is engaged to a desperate woman who she met who was trying to commit suicide in a mockery to lesbians everywhere *Jaws Music*.
When Girlfriends first started, I really liked it. It was funny, even if I didn’t quite agree with the characters and their ideas. It was also very intelligently written. After a couple of seasons, though, I stopped watching. I thought that the characters did not appear, for the most part, to be evolving much. I started watching at the end of last season, and I must say that the shark has been jumped, maybe two or three times over.
You can pretty much stick a fork in it cause it’s done. Shark jumpings are usually punctuated by weddings, divorces, or kids (either in the form of babies or new cute kids to replace resident cute kids that are getting older i.e. Different Strokes with Sam or the Cosby Show with Olivia), and this past season finale you had a wedding, a divorce and a kid. The season opened with a woman who is not a lesbian, just engaged to one, or something like that.
If you’re a Girlfriends fan, don’t be scurred. Shows can last two or three seasons after the shark has been jumped. You might want to have a back up plan for the night of the tenth anniversary show, though.

Wow…I usually don’t watch this show. I used to watch it the second season but stopped. Last night I caught part of the episode about the AIDS film. That was pretty good. But yeah, they keep rehashing the same material. New writers perhaps??? Ah well…having loyalties to any show for longer than a season went the way of the Cosby Show and New York Undercover.

ahh, jumping the shark. like when dwayne and whitley got married. or joan and william tried to get together. again. and again. i never really liked this show much anyway. you kinda have to like the characters to keep up with a show and frankly, i can’t stand any of these people. but when nothing else is on…

I never really cared for em much myself. I had no idea that things had gone to shark status though. Man, I miss the Cosby Show early days… Back when folks wanted to do quality writing…LOL…
