Helping the teacher

Whew! Yesterday was the first day I helped my son’s teacher out. I am going to be volunteering once or twice a month. While I wait for my background check to go through (it is a shame, but that is the kind of world we live in these days), I have to do lesson preparation type stuff. After I finished helping my son’s teacher with her work, I went and did some work for one of the other teachers. I think those teachers are trying to haze us volunteers. She must have needed about half a million 2″ by 2″ squares in fifty different colors. For most of the day, I felt like I was having the first day of school. I really messed up a few sheets of paper, but I got the hang of things after about ten minutes.

My husband stayed with the kids while I did my classroom volunteer work. They totally ran all over him. He was in such shock when I got back. One of the exchanges went something like this…
“Did you know the baby doesn’t stay still when you try to change her diaper?”
“Isn’t she clean and fresh when you get home? She doesn’t change herself, hon, but I know that she tries to make a get away once you clean her off.”

Needless to say, the baby won’t let me out of her sight now that I have returned.

Girl, that is just a taste of what a teacher does in a typical day. Thank goodness for parents like you who are willing to volunteer your time! I can’t believe that put the parent volunteers through all that pre-screening when they don’t even require that for teachers in this state. All we needed were finger prints. No drug testing, background screening…nothing!

I can’t believe they don’t screen the teachers like they screen the parents, either. Hmph!
