Faith in Action

With so many tales of heartache in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, I thought I’d share this (AP). I had seen it briefly mentioned on the news. The church is assisting with housing, feeding and clothing these people for about three months. They have already started providing jobs and training as well.

A small group of storm victims arrived in Portland by bus this weekend in a trip arranged by a pastor who grew up in Gulfport, Miss.

The Gulfport group was invited by the Powerhouse Temple Church of God In Christ. Pastor Mary Overstreet said she cashed in two certificates of deposit and sold her Arizona vacation home for money to help people from her hometown.

Over the weekend, Overstreet’s daughters Rosetta Forbes of Portland and Anna Forbes of Tennessee greeted families as they stepped off a Greyhound bus.

Overstreet said she will pay the cost of rent, reduced by the landlord, and utilities in a southeast Portland apartment complex. She plans to provide the same help for another 20 to 30 people who want to come to the state.

“They are broke, homeless, disturbed and need something to get them back on their feet,” Overstreet said.

“I figure, why give them a cot when I could give them a key?”

It was a really beautiful thing on the news. They were saying how the people had jobs/training and furniture and everything set up for them. I thought, “What a blessing!” After losing everything to be shown such mercy and love, and I knowed there is a God.
