Lily is the newest muppet on Sesame Street. She’ll make her debut on a new prime time special, “Growing Hope Against Hunger.” Lily shares with her muppet friend Elmo that sometimes she goes to the food pantry with her family. According to the USDA, about sixteen million children are “food insecure” which means they lack access to consistent, nutritional nourishment. The Sesame Street episode also shares information about food drives, vegetable gardens and volunteering as ways to help those in need. I think Lily is a good thing because it helps children understand that kids who deal with hunger are people just like them. It saddens me that her story has become so common, though.
