Dr. Jewell Plummer Cobb was born January 17, 1924 in Chicago and is known for her important cell research on melanin (how it protects the skin from ultraviolet damage and the difference between normal and cancerous cells) . Her studies of the effects of chemotherapeutic drugs made her one of the leading cancer researchers in the United States. Dr. Jewell Plummer Cobb has used her achievements in science and education [she served as president of California State University at Fullerton (1982-1990)] as a means to extend opportunities to women and people of color. For her work helping minorities discover the rewards of a career in science, Cobb received the 1993 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Science. (Some info from Answers.com)
