I have seen the dark side of Halloweeen and it’s name is costume shopping. Little A is going to have a halloween fall festival party and parade at school on the 31st (A question about political correctness gone awry: How many festivals have you heard of that are taking place October 31? ). She needed to dress as a character from a book, so she is going to be Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. I have to get her a little stuffed Terrier and a basket so she can have her little dog too. It all started off so innocently.
I looked at a couple of other places, but there were no book based costumes. So I had to go to the party supply, which becomes the costume shop this time of year. All of us parents who were suckered in had to go to the back wall of the store, where photographs portrayed costumes. Maybe it was for organizational purposes but a part of me wondered if they were having inventory shrinkage problems.
We waited… and waited… and waited… and then we got the costume. Then we waited…and waited…and waited… in line to pay for it. I am wondering if the kids will ever see Halloween the same way because we all ran out of the store. And no one has mentioned a costume since. I hope they are not too traumatized.
