NAACP Awards/HIV Rate Increase in Botswana

I normally skip this awards program, but I decided to watch because I heard that Bono was getting the Chairman’s award. I really really respect the work that he has done on behalf of the poor and those affected by HIV/AIDS. I was also really happy to learn that NAACP would be teaming up with the ONE foundation and its campaign to end poverty. Not to mention the Roots’ tribute. Great stuff.

Now for the bad news.
I read this and was stunned. In a relatively educated and affluent society like Botswana, 75 percent of people know that condoms prevent HIV, 50 percent know that abstinence does, AND ONLY 20 PERCENT KNOW THAT A COMMITTED, MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIP WITH AN UNINFECTED PERSON DOES? That’s very troubling. I mean isnt that common sense. Over here, the condom can break, over here no risk and over there as long as everybody holds up their end of the bargain – no risk.

The Muslim communities in North Africa are credited in the article with having low incident of HIV because of the society’s expectations of sex within the confines of monogamous/polygamous marriage and moreso because of the fact that they are circumcised. I think that they got it backwards, that the sexual practices have a greater impact.
