Myspace legal has their hands full these days. There are five outstanding lawsuits by parents whose kids have been sexually abused at the hands of people they met on the site. Four of the lawsuits were filed in LA, where myspace is based. At least a year or so ago, I told my husband that people were going to start suing because the place has been a known hangout for predators and teens FOR YEARS. Cops have been calling up parents telling them, “Your child is putting way too much information out here.” FOR YEARS. And now it has come to pass.
I’ve used myspace to quickly contact my sisters and a college bud or two, but it just didnt seem like a good fit for me personally. Just struck me as a teen hangout and well, I’ve got a son who is going to be a teen in a few years. Before I left the site, I resolved that it would be on our block list, because I didnt want to have to be on the news in jail because of some perv one of my kids spoke to on the site.
A lot of my fellow parents puzzle me sometimes. I know one who got into a major blowout with her 12 year old daughter. The girl had run up a cellular bill talking to a boy. And the girl still had a phone. Now it will be close to a miracle if ANY of my kids get anything beyond the 911\fire\moms home\moms cell\dads cell programmed number and cant call anybody else cellular device, but running up a bill? Can you say SNATCHED cell phone? I knew you could. So many parents want don’t want to be the heavy. Not with the cell phone. Not with the internet. Not with anything, and I know I can be naive sometimes, but I thought that being the parent, meant, well, being the grownup in the situation. Being the person who says, no you cant have that cell since you cant manage it. No, you cant have a site since you feel the need to represent your neighborhood, school and cul de sac with a photograph of yourself in your skivvies. Then again, maybe it’s me.
Then there is the chatting for hours unchecked. Shouldn’t there be a talk going on here? Then again, some parents dont even get around to the birds and the bees these days. Why would I expect internet safety to come into the picture? Silly me. I mean, if Bobby and Whitney can’t keep up with Nympho Babby, then where is the hope for the rest of us?
