Abuse victims denied insurance.

ribbon2Everybody, regardless of ethnicity or class, knows someone who has been a victim of abuse by a spouse or domestic partner. Because of the mental assault that takes place, it takes time, effort, planning  and prodding to get victims to remove themselves and sometimes their children from these damaging situations. In eight states (Idaho, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Wyoming) and the District of Columbia, insurance companies are allowed to deny or increase the cost of insurance to people they deem to be victims of domestic violence. Insurance agents have even been known, according to this article, to go to courthouses in search of Protection of Abuse orders so that they could deny coverage based on the preexisting condition of abuse. I hope all of those town hall meeting stormers know who they are defending and why because I would not ever want to be involved in defending the kinds of people who would do this.
