I don’t think I’ve written about the situation with Dr. Henry Louis “Skip” Gates, Jr. being arrested or the charges being dropped or the cop not apologizing. You have a tired man who wants to get into his house but the lock is stuck. He tries, with the help of his driver, to push the door open, but does not succeed. Once he goes into the back of his house, he is greeted by the police. Outrage ensues and Professor Gates ends up in cuffs. Would the police have been called (or would any other part of this situation have followed) if a white professor and his driver were trying to get into the house? I would hope so, but I doubt it. Was the arrest an example of an otherwise good cop having a bad day? It’s possible, but not certain. Both of these articles from The Daily Beast bring up good points.
