red purses and rebroadening horizons.

Until around the end of February I don’t think I owned one red handbag that was not a clutch or something. Not for everyday use. It just did not strike me as practical. I had been spying one for a couple of months, but I somehow always managed to talk myself out of it. Then Diva went and got this bag and I was like, you know what, I’m going to get a red bag too! LOL. And so I did. I sort of felt like maybe I was getting a small piece of my old self back. All that for a handbag? I know, right?

When I was growing up, I had an uncle who lived in the OC, wayyy back before it was the OC. LOL. He offered each of us nieces and nephews the opportunity to come to Southern California. To visit him for two weeks. All we had to do was remind him when we graduated high school. It was a gift. So you KNOW who I called first after I got home from high school graduation, right? Right. The funny thing was there were actually people in our family who passed on the trip. Some were scared to fly. Some didn’t want to make the exchange of the familiar for the unfamiliar. Even if it was for two weeks.

And while my 18 year old, take-on-the-world/protest-at-the-drop-of-a-hat self could not even begin to comprehend such reservations. Here I was, a few years and kids and bills later, passing on a snappy little bag that went with my red coat because of some concern about it being practical over the long haul. Who was afraid to swap the tried and true for something new now? So I got it. I like it. I even plan to get one or two more before the season is over. I don’t plan to be a bag hag, but if I’m careful, I can get myself something nice every now and then. Even if it is small. I have to remember that. On a regular basis, while I’m helping everybody else. Everybody should do that. Even if it’s just something small, just to do something nice every now and then for one’s self.
