In my family, it was a tradition for my mom to take the daughters to the first gynecological examination around the time after the first period or so. Make sure that everything was in correct order and start things off in terms of looking after reproductive health. Being responsible for ourselves. Imagine my surprise to learn that some junior high schools are about to start handing out birth control to children. And that the majority of people support this? Did they use some of the leftover participants from the recreational crack use survey or something?
As you can probably tell, I have tremendous misgivings about a lot of aspects of the American public school system. Maybe it’s experience, I don’t know, but I just am not all honky dory with the people at school advising my children on birth control issues. Whatever happened to talking to one’s own kids and taking things from there? How does one give an eleven year old birth control with a clear conscience? There are NO eleven year olds with the mental capacity to foster sexual relationships. Shoot, 99.9 percent of eighteen year olds aren’t ready. Shoot. My kid needs a book of documentation to take a baby aspirin and THESE PEOPLE are handing out condoms and birth control pills faster than you can say achoo? So sad. So sad.
